Abstract

Text

  • This Springer Brief has started with the discussion on the importance of performance evaluation criteria in the design of heat exchangers for single-phase flow and two-phase flow. The objectives and constraints in developing different performance evaluation criteria have been discussed.

  • Then attention has been mainly focused on performance evaluation criteria for single-phase flow. The objectives and constraints of fixed geometry criteria, variable geometry criteria and fixed cross-sectional flow area criteria have been discussed. The thermal resistance, St and f relations, heat exchanger effectiveness, effect of reduced exchanger flow rate and flow over finned tube banks have been presented.

  • Thereafter discussion follows with works carried out by various researchers across the globe on performance evaluation criteria based on first law analysis and second law analysis. The importance of using proper criteria which considers both first law and second law analysis in order to evaluate the performance of augmentation techniques has been presented.

  • The Brief concludes with performance evaluation criteria analysis for two-phase flow. The disadvantages of using single-phase PEC correlations for two-phase flow have been discussed. Also, the factors to be considered to modify the single-phase PEC such that they can be applicable to two-phase flow have been listed.
