Abstract

Let’s leave the administrative struggles and business conspiracies for what they are and return to the more physical violence of the tuna wars of the third millennium and their fall out on sustainability. Take Somalia. With one of Africa’s longest coasts (without any authority to speak of and plagued by Islamist insurgents) this country had become an ideal operating base for modern pirates. The film Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, told the true, horrifying and sad story of the hijacking of the cargo ship Maersk Alabama by Somali pirates. The distant water fleets of the big tuna fishing nations, Taiwan, Spain and France, were also frequently attacked by pirate gangs in their heavily armed speedboats.
