The Irreparable

Two large projects dominated Blaser’s later years: “Great Companion: Dante Alighiere” and The Last Supper. The first brought Blaser’s love of Dante to fruition with a reading of the poem at a Dante conference in Pescara, Italy in 1997. The second was a libretto written in collaboration with British composer, Sir Harrison Birtwistle on the last supper of Christ, launched at the Berlin Staatssoper in 2000. Both of these pieces orbit Blaser’s fascination with philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s concept of the “Irreparable,” and both gather up a lifetime of thinking about the sacred. The chapter also covers Blaser’s collaboration with Meredith Quartermain on a book of lyrics (Wanders); the gigs and parties that filled his social calendar; his last effort toward a major Image-Nation poem; and his final years.
