Big Poetry

  • Miriam Nichols
Part of the Modern and Contemporary Poetry and Poetics book series (MPCC)

This chapter begins with a discussion of Blaser’s response to the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s and then follows him through the publication of his first collected poems, The Holy Forest (1993). A highlight among newer poems of the collection is a tribute to Duncan following Duncan’s death in 1988 (“Great Companion: Robert Duncan”), and the chapter includes a detailed reading of it. In 1995, Blaser was honored at a conference on his work and in a subsequent publication of the papers under the title The Recovery of the Public World. The “Big Poetry” section of this chapter discusses Blaser’s poetics in the context of then-current theoretical conversations about poetry in that volume as presented at the conference.
