Machining Time Optimization by Tool Retraction Trajectory Control in 3 Axis CNC

Turning and facing are the most commonly performed operations on CNC machines. Tool retraction is done to break contact between the component and cutting tool which allows rapid retraction further in the cycle. Tool retraction is one of the parameters affecting machining time. The total machining time reduction is achieved by changing two parameters related to tool retraction. Best possible method of retraction which gives optimal machining time is convenient for the mass production of components. The effective solution proposed can be used as a benchmark while programming facing operation on 3-axis CNC machine. This study presents an optimal approach of tool retraction by comparing between best possible tool retraction methods for facing operation.
