More attention is being paid to physiological and psychological effects of chronic stress. Medical students often suffer from burnout, anxiety, and depression. The stress management skills students develop during this time can set the tone for how they cope with stress in the future. One of the tools for stress management that has been practiced for centuries is mindfulness. Mindfulness-based meditation techniques such as loving kindness meditation and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been well researched. Several studies have shown how mindfulness-based programs during medical school training can help students cultivate compassion, altruism, and resiliency by enhancing self-care behavior.
