Part of the Palgrave Historical Studies in Witchcraft and Magic book series (PHSWM)

Marking the twentieth anniversary of the publication of Professor Ronald Hutton’s The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft in 1999, this chapter takes stock of the context, significance, and influence of that pioneering volume. Providing a biographical overview of Hutton’s life and his ongoing interest in the history of Wicca and modern Paganism more broadly, it details the various ways in which The Triumph of the Moon has been received, both among Pagan practitioners and among academics. In addition, it provides a terminological outline of how terms like “Wicca,” “Paganism,” and “occultism” are used in this edited collection, before outlining the contents of the chapters contained therein.
