Abstract

Ogyū Sorai is one of the scholars of early modern Japan who had the greatest impact on later generations. His scholarship brought changes not only to Confucianism, but also to many other fields such as literature, medicine, and the arts, e.g. painting. Not only the men who belonged to his school, but also many who belonged to schools that were antagonistic to his, tell that the advent of Sorai’s teachings was an important turning point in the history of scholarship. When one studies the history of thought of early modern Japan, it is, therefore, impossible to evade the problem how to position Ogyū Sorai. This situation turns tracing the history of the study of Sorai’s thought into the near equivalent of tracing the history of the study of Japan’s early modern thought as a whole. In this article, therefore, I will give a bird’s-eye view of the currents in the study of the history of Japan’s early modern thought since the war; within that context I will then comment on the trends in the study of Sorai.
