I’ll never forget the first time I saw something I designed on the shelves of a store. It was a simple docking station for a handheld computer (Fig. 1.1). When I saw it, I picked it up and marveled at every piece of plastic, every screw, and every layer of plating on each of the precisely formed electrical contacts. It was one of those rare and embarrassing moments where I’m sure I heard dramatic music from a movie soundtrack playing in the background. To say I was proud about what was on that shelf would be a huge understatement.
