Abstract
DBS of the retro-hypothalamic region has been proposed as a prophylactic treatment for refractory chronic CH. Its efficacy has been reported in several open studies and case series but not confirmed in controlled condition. DBS is efficient in about 60–70% of the patients (decrease of attack frequency >50%). Although rare, the main risk remains the potential occurrence of an intracranial hemorrhage, which prompts to reserve DBS for medically refractory CH patients who are also resistant to other neuromodulation alternatives, namely occipital nerve stimulation and sphenopalatine ganglion stimulation.
