Spiritual Intelligence in the Gig Economy

The employee marketplace has transformed dramatically in the past two decades with an increasing pace of automation and digitization. This has led to the emergence of ‘gig workforce’. The concept of gig workforce relates to the on-demand workforce or contractual employees. The evolving work set-up in gig economy is quite distinct as compared to the traditional work settings. The former provides greater flexibility and autonomy to workforce in a virtual plane while in traditional context, the employees are bounded in rigid organization contracts, rules and regulations in conventional set-up. The gig work culture has proven cost effective and beneficial for organizations, but this requires the virtual workforce to be self-organized in absence of any formal organizational contract for quality work and overall organizational success. Here, in this chapter, we suggest spiritual intelligence as the binding force that can help integrate the mutual goals of the virtual workers and the organization in the gig context. The spiritual intelligence is understood as the self-awareness about the vision on work expectations to act towards the attainment of higher quality levels of work. This endeavor for doing better work from own intrinsic motivation as a service to larger good attributes to a sense of contentment, which further leads to consistent work performance. Building upon this, this chapter presents a conceptual understanding of spirituality to advance the discussion on spiritual intelligence. The implication of spiritual intelligence in organizational context was discussed.
