Abstract

Humankind today is changing essential components of the Earth’s system including the climate system, without sufficient understanding of the constituting ingredients. There is an urgent need for a better knowledge of the Earth’s system and the interrelations among its components. This need cannot be satisfied without two requirements, measurements and observations of a large set of influencing parameters and concepts and models characterizing the Earth’s science system.
