School, Community, and Students: The River

Abstract

This chapter describes the study site—The Anchor School—as well as the surrounding communities and student participants. The Anchor School is a private K-12, Quaker institution that values service, a search for truth, and silent reflection. It is located in a semi-rural area of a Southern state and is in close proximity to a few urban areas that are considered socially liberal. The school community was supportive of LGBTQ+ rights and causes, and students talked about these easily, though they had a more difficult time discussing race and racism. Contradictions within Quaker education regarding social justice are also explored, which may have affected student mindsets. Lastly, the personalities and interests of the student participants, who were in fifth through seventh grade, are described.
