Peer Coaching as a Means of EFL Teachers’ Professional Development
Abstract
Professional development course Peer Coaching in Work Practice of EFL Teachers has as its purpose to advance the professionalism of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) university teacher by training them to promote frequent, informal, helpful observations by one professional educator to another, to give necessary rationale feedback and coach each other. The course provides some practical guidelines on how to effectively implement the educational strategy of Peer Coaching as one of the most successful professional development technique in teaching EFL at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU). The article presents the findings aimed at understanding the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating peer-coaching into the proposed in-service training course for EFL teachers at NSTU. Data collected over the period of the training demonstrate positive attitude of the trainees towards peer coaching and reveal aspects of the newly adopted educational strategy that are perceived as highly motivational for professional development by the participants.
