Abstract

In the long-term ESA program, which had to establish the planning for the space missions to be launched within the first two decades of the new millennium, Gaia was in the group of so-called “Cornerstone missions,” that is, those large-budget projects deemed most important for the agency. It is easy to understand that these missions had to prevail in a highly competitive selection process against a large number of hardened contenders.
