Abstract
This chapter presents an overview of clinical practice projects and the development of the use of research projects within Swedish healthcare. However, how relevant a clinical practice project may be, it will not implement itself. The research-to-practice gap is the result of many interrelated factors, but leadership is an essential component of successful clinical implementation. The Swedish National Quality Registries used in an integrated and active way for continuing learning, improvement and research are described. The chapter also covers guidelines for implementation in clinical practice, regarding pressure ulcer prevention, for example, in addition to various research projects that have resulted in clinical guidelines. Two initiatives for developing leadership initiatives and retaining registered nurses with leadership skills within the clinical setting are also presented: (1) the introduction by the Swedish Society of Nursing of the Magnet Hospital concept developed in the United States in which nursing leaders involve staff registered nurses in shaping research-based nursing practice and (2) work options for registered nurses holding a PhD that combine teaching, research and clinical work to support optimal patient outcomes.
