Chapter 5: I Can’t Believe It Myself Most Days …

  • John B. Lee
Chapter

Abstract

Lee’s essay is a humourous and heartfelt account of his life as a student, a teacher and as the spouse of a teacher. Although he was a secondary school teacher for fourteen years, one of his former elementary school teachers said to him, “I thought you hated teachers.” His admiration for this kindly woman comes into play as Lee recounts the tale of the last time he was threatened with receiving the strap. He goes on to recount the numerous occasions when his wife was confronted by the sad reality of the lives of impoverished children in her classroom and how she became an heroic advocate for their needs at a time when the political climate was less than sympathetic to the less fortunate.
