Gottlob examines the struggle over interpretations of the past in the political life of modern India. In recent decades, history has moved towards the centre of public attention in India and historical arguments are used in order to substantiate political claims. The debate centres on the ‘Textbook Controversy’ from 2000 to 2004. The introduction of a new National Curriculum Framework for School Education by the NDA government in 2000 laid particular emphasis on valuing education. The subsequent revision and censure of certain texts led to controversy, particularly concerning the depiction of relations between Hindus and Muslims, and the conflicts between sects, castes and classes. The 2014 re-election of the Bharatiya Janata Party to power has caused concern that history teaching will again come under threat.
