Geosites, Geoheritage, Human-Environment Interactions, and Sustainable Geotourism in Dogu’a Tembien

Abstract

High-value geological formations are among the least-protected heritages of our globe. In the Ethiopian context, the study on geosites, geoheritages and geodiversity is at its infant stage. Many potential geosites/geoparks have been under complete destruction. This book chapter is, therefore, first in kind to introduce the geosites of Dogu’a Tembien, their interaction with humans and protection status. The area is part of the volcano-sedimentary succession of the Ger’alta and the Simien mountain chains. Deep canyons flanked by carbonates and sandstone cliffs host most of the geosites of Dogu’a Tembien. Phonolitic volcanics made antiquity (i.e., dimension stones, church bells) also adds glory to the geosite potential of the area. However, the low-level of geoheritage protection and conservation in the area and region, eases the destruction of the identified and unidentified geosites of Dogu’a Tembien.
