The Cavalier Cartography of The Kentuckian in New-York

  • Peter Templeton

William Alexander Caruthers’s novel, The Kentuckian in New-York, seeks to restore harmony between the different sections of the US in a turbulent political climate. This chapter, though, demonstrates that, despite this lofty goal, Caruthers’s work relies on a number of existing biases with regards to region, and, like Jefferson, significant pastoral prejudices such as for rural environments over the urban. This chapter also focuses on the way in which a self-consciously Jeffersonian author such as Caruthers could still create fiction that marginalises a figure in keeping with the yeoman ideal, while drawing heavily on the conventions of romance to create more aristocratic, and indeed heroic, Southern characters.
