Forgery or Genuine?

Abstract

The history of research on the Velestino assemblage was blocked for a long while by Michael Rostovtzeff’s disparaging remarks in the 1920s. He believed the assemblage to be a forgery, and the distrust that his remarks inspired is largely responsible for the lack of any studies in the last century, despite a number of significant efforts, particularly in the USA, to put the study of the Velestino find on the right track by means of scientific analyses. The archive of the Princeton University Art Museum contains a relatively significant body of correspondence between Princeton museum curators and various specialists who were contacted to express their opinions about the “Thessalian antiquities”. Metallographic analyses were carried out on several objects in the early 1940s and in 1980. The archive also shows a systematic effort to keep track of similar pieces that occasionally surfaced on the antique market, such as the bronze votive hand sold at Sotheby in 1989.
