Chapter 18 Syllabic Consonants: A little Less certain

Abstract

In RP, syllabic /l/ and /n/ were very common, e.g. little [ˈlɪtl̩], certain [ˈsəːtn̩]. Many speakers today pronounce such syllables with normally released /t/ and /d/ followed by a weak vowel, e.g. little ˈlɪtəl, certain ˈsəːtən.
