Performing Style

Part of the Italian and Italian American Studies book series (IIAS)

This chapter focuses on the sine qua non of late capitalist “taste cultures” (Thornton 1995: 10), a style of consumption fashioned out of the collective appropriation of popular American culture. Style is a narrative of Italian American youth “becoming somebody else” (Calefato 2004). Guido is fundamentally a project to engage popular American culture for a signature style of consumption within local youth style markets. The chapter draws on ethnographic research, beginning in the late 1980s, following a trajectory grounded in a local youth style tradition and increasingly oriented to hedonistic and commodified consumption.
