Abstract

In this dissertation, I have presented the results of my investigations into the photophysics of molecular oxygen in solution. First and foremost, these investigations have led to the development of a practical method to cleanly, selectively, and quantifiably produce singlet oxygen in liquid systems without the need for photosensitizers. It is my hope that this method will become a valuable addition to the toolbox when future researchers endeavor to elucidate the action of singlet oxygen in living organisms and elsewhere.
