Abstract

Although the origins of clapping rhymes can be traced back to the seventeenth century, present day clapping games do not appear to be very old, but have received far less attention than skipping or ball bouncing games, for example. Most contemporary versions are likely to owe their inspiration to pop songs, entertainment rhymes, ball bouncing rhymes, etc., and continue to be very popular with primary school children. The twenty-two examples, plus variants, presented here, illustrate their variety and inventiveness.
