Abstract

Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others designed and developed the UNIX operating system at Bell Labs in the early 1970s. It is a multitasking and multiuser operating system that was written almost entirely in the C programming language. UNIX arose out of work by MIT, General Electric, and Bell Labs on the development of a general time-sharing operating system called “Multics.”
