Abstract

A mouse is a pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface, which generally involves the motion of a pointer on a display. It is held in the user’s hand and usually has one or more buttons and a scroll wheel. The term “mouse” became an accepted term of the modern computer lexicon when it was introduced as a standard part of the Apple Macintosh in 1984. Douglas Engelbart invented the computer mouse at SRI in the mid-1960s. His invention consisted of a wooden shell, a circuit board, and two metal wheels that came into contact with the surface that it was being used on.
