Abstract

The original Iridium was a global satellite phone company that was backed by Motorola, and it included an infrastructure of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide worldwide communication coverage. The satellites are at an altitude of approximately 780 km, and they have an approximate velocity of 27,000 km/h and complete an orbit of the earth in less than 2 h. The 66 Iridium satellites are arranged in 6 orbits of 11 satellites each, and the satellites are programmable, to keep the system functioning at the required performance and reliability levels. There are in-orbit spares in a storage orbit, and a spare can be quickly repositioned and activated in the event of failure.
