Abstract

A candidate for some election plans her/his campaign. Call x the number of voters she/he will contact and y the cost of the campaign. Such a cost depends on the number x of contacted voters. Such dependence is represented mathematically as follows:
$$\begin{aligned} y=f\left( x\right) \end{aligned}$$
to be read “y equal to f of x”. We can think of f as a black box which transforms the input x, the number of people you contact, into the output y, the number of votes you gather:
