Cosmopolitan Practices: Grieg, Grainger, and the Search for a Musical Analogue

Abstract

Having explored how Grieg embraced cosmopolitanism as a set of ideas and practices, this chapter focuses on the role that Percy Grainger played in recognizing these functions during a period when few others would. Their similar processes of blurring boundaries—stylistically, ideologically, and socially—became the foundation for a significant bond that shaped Granger’s career well into the twentieth century. By paying special attention to the explicit link between harmonic language and the spectrum of modernisms for which their works became a catalyst, this chapter seeks to challenge prevailing national narratives and reorient their legacies by offering a more accurate assessment of their multidimensional cosmopolitan style. It also demonstrates the various ways in which Grieg became part of Grainger’s prized network of Nordic artists that included writers past and present—the very figures who would eventually accompany Grainger throughout a darker turn in his cosmopolitan imagination after 1920.
