For Us, Today: Understanding Curriculum as Theological Text in the Twenty-First Century

Abstract

Drawing from feminist, queer, and conventional theologies, Whitlock considers theology as framework and method for curriculum theorizing. Drawing theologically from early mid-twentieth-century theologians Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Paul Tillich and from curriculum theorists Pinar, Huebner and Purpel, she then brings queer and feminist theologians into the curriculum conversation, notably using Althaus-Reid’s notion of indecent theology. A queer feminist theology curriculum theory is one of participation and engagement, concerned with new ethics of relation in the search for the divine life and humanity’s participation in it. By way of example, the author works within this framework and employs the proposed methodology to queerly disrupt heteronormative, homonormative notions of Christian ethics. Whitlock attends to understanding curriculum as theological text by showing not so much how engaging in relational ethics might help humanity come to know God—one definition of theology—but how through such engagement God might know us.
