Abstract

A major focus of new models in postgraduate medical education is a shift away from time- and objective-based training to a competency-based framework. Surgical educators uniformly agree that technical skills exercises designed to allow the resident to optimize their operative learning and experience will play a critical role. Within this framework, assessment of learning becomes vital to the entire process and must be robust enough to ensure that developmental milestones are accurately assessed. As surgeon educators we must actively take ownership of the future of training, or it will inherently fall into the hands of nonclinicians.
