Giant Stars and Their Variability

Long-period variables (LPVs) and pulsating variables (PV) are comprised of a huge variety of stars that show great promise to any observer who wishes to take up the discipline of recording variable starlight curves. Their longer periods, and in the case of the red giant stars, large range of magnitudes, enable the observer to record over an extended period of time; the interference from inclement weather is reduced, as missing data is not as important in long term periodicity as it would be with cataclysmic variables. Additionally, such stars are visible for long stretches of the year and only out of observational range for a few weeks of the year, when in conjunction with the Sun. Therefore, these stars form a very important backbone of variable star observing.
