Abstract

Background

An observatory of ENT diseases in children was set up. It aimed at estimating the incidence of acute episodes of rhinopharyngitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, sinusitis and laryngitis and evaluating their time-space evolution in winter in France. In addition, this study evaluated the ability of our surveillance platform generator to implement and manage such an observatory.

Methods

A network of practitioners, “observers”, declares the cases cared during their consultation. The incidence ofthe observed diseases is estimated. Results are available on line by interactive and direct access to data, or by newsletters including weekly national and regional reports.

Results

The observatory operated during the winter seasons 2005–2006 and 2006–2007 with a network of general practitioners, ENT specialists and paediatricians. A cumulative number of 388,685 consultations have been collected during the two seasons. The mean number of consultations was then estimated at 18.6 millions for all of France during each winter for these diseases which corresponded to more than 1.65 consultation per child per season.

Conclusion

Over the last 2 winters, the Hivern@le-KhiObs observatory showed the very high incidence of ENT infections. This health platform helps to better understand the spread of these diseases during winter in order to contribute to a rationalization of the public health approach ofthese diseases.
