Abstract

Having discussed the role of the caregiver in supporting a patient with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) dementia in previous chapters, it is important to explain briefly what we understand by the term ‘caregiver.’ No definitive explanation of the term exists; however it is generally accepted that a caregiver provides extraordinary help and care, exceeding the bounds of what is normative or usual, sometimes at a great cost to themselves. There is also a general consensus that this support is provided predominantly by a partner or family member (Schulz and Martire in Am J Geriatr Psychiatry 12:240–249, 2004).
