The Impact of Expanded Biofuel Production on Living Nature
Chapter
Abstract
Large scale production of transport biofuels will have a large effect on living nature and will negatively affect biodiversity and services provided by ecosystems. The negative environmental effects follow from replacement of nature by biofuel cropping, harvesting practices, the effects of intensified agriculture and the invasive behaviour of some species serving as biofuel crops. Options to mitigate negative effects include integration of patches of primary forest into biofuel plantations and precision cropping.
