Investigation on the Built-up Edge of Aluminium Matrix Composites
Conference paper
Abstract
Through orthogonal free cutting and circumferential cutting tests of SiC reinforced aluminum matrix composites, formation of the built-up edge (BUE) during cutting process was verified by observing the SEM photos of the chip bottom specimen obtained with the aid of a quick-stop tool device, and it was first found that there is big difference between the BUE of aluminium matrix composites and that of carbon steel. The shape of the BUE of aluminium matrix composites looks like wedge in comparison with that of carbon steel, and its development mechanism is mechanical enchasing other than cool welding.
