Preventive Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle

A Cost-Effective Approach to Improved Health

Abstract

Nutrition can play a key and cost-effective role in decreasing risks of different chronic diseases. An increasing body of evidence suggests that there are far more commonalities relating to how nutrition reduces risk factors for varied chronic diseases than differences (1). Different diets are not required to decrease risk of cancer, compared to cardiovascular disease (CVD). For example, as preventive nutrition strategies, increasing intake of fruits and vegetables has been linked to decreased prevalence of CVD, stroke, and also cancer (2–11). Likewise, increased whole grain intake (compared to refined grains) has been associated with decreased prevalence of CVD, cancer, and also type II diabetes (12–17).
