Energy Balances in a Homogeneous Fluid

  • Constantine Pozrikidis
Chapter

Abstract

The total energy of the fluid residing inside a material fluid parcel is comprised of three constituents: (a) the potential energy due to an external body force, (b) the kinetic energy due to the motion of the fluid, and (c) the internal energy defined in the sense of thermodynamics, as discussed in Appendix B. The sum of the potential and the kinetic energies constitutes the mechanical energy. Although the external force field responsible for the potential energy is typically the gravitational field, other force fields can be encountered.
