Abstract

In the second chapter, we introduce the concepts of force, traction, and stress developing in a fluid consisting of a single chemical species. By invoking Newton’s second law of motion for a material fluid parcel, we derive the Cauchy equation of motion for a compressible or incompressible fluid. By combining the equation of motion with the Reynolds transport equation, we derive a momentum balance and associated equation of momentum transport over a control volume in a way that is rigorous, intuitive, and free of ad-hoc stipulations.
