“Sexual Savages:” Christian Stereotypes and Violence Against North America’s Native Women

Abstract

In this chapter, I first discuss the status of British women in the North American colonies and the status of Native women in their own societies. I describe Christian ministers’ roles in the stereotyping of Native women as “sexual savages” and trace the continued application of these stereotypes in genocidal government actions and in government-church alliances to force assimilation. I then discuss the social messages implicit in popular-culture depictions of Native women that continued to perpetuate these negative stereotypes, contributing to social and governmental disinterest in protecting them. Next, I describe the aggregate impact of these actions by summarizing recent statistics on violent victimization of indigenous women in the USA and Canada. In concluding, I suggest ways that Christian leaders and mental health professionals can reduce this violence through a reconciliation and healing process.
