18 Laparoscopic Gastric Plication

Abstract

Bariatric surgery is known to be the most effective treatment for morbid obesity. Surgical mechanisms for weight loss involve restriction of food intake, decreased absorption, or a combination of both. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy are the most widely used restrictive procedures. In spite of the good weight loss outcomes, the surgical approach is not free of complications.

Laparoscopic greater curvature plication is a technique that aims to replicate sleeve gastrectomy results, with fewer complications. It creates a restriction without the use of foreign bodies or gastric resection, involving no cutting or stapling, with the potential to be reversible. Weight loss seen in published series is comparable to that achieved with adjustable gastric banding. In this chapter the authors present current available data for gastric plication, analyzing the mechanisms, technique, results, and complications.
