Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery (TAMIS): Operative Technique, Pitfalls, and Tips

Abstract

Management of benign and malignant rectal tumors is challenging through traditional transanal techniques, resulting in substandard results. Ongoing evolution of transanal platforms to perform these procedures has allowed transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) to develop. TAMIS has improved access and visibility in the rectum allowing for the safe and oncologically sound resection of rectal neoplasms. It has also allowed the development of complex and innovative procedures such as transanal total mesorectal resections TME (TaTME). TAMIS is associated with a relatively short learning curve for those already facile with laparoscopic skills, and its ease of use mandates that it should be in every colorectal surgeon’s armament.
