Abstract

The state, operating through government policies and the legal system, has brought considerable change to the work of the personnel officer in the past few years via legislation, manpower policies and income policies. These issues are addressed in more detail in Chapter 8 of the core text in this series, ‘Business in Context’. The purpose of this chapter is to examine the current legislation relating to employment which has a direct impact upon the day to day work of the business. Personnel management has developed quite clearly as a result of managers reacting to external constraints and pressures, especially to the increasing role played by legislation in the employment situation.

Further reading

  1. J. Bowers, A Practical Approach to Employment Law (Financial Training Ltd) — a good practical employment law book, perhaps too detailed for business students in some areas. Another excellent textbook is R. Lewis, Labour Law in Britain (Blackwell). S. Anderman, The Law of Unfair Dismissal (Butterworths) — the leading book on unfair dismissal, but sometimes too academic. An easier book (and more up to date) is M. Mead, Unfair Dismissals Handbook (Oyez Longman). There are several cases and materials books but perhaps the best is P. Benedictus and B. Bercusson, Labour Law: Cases and Materials (Sweet and Maxwell). Other books covering parts of this chapter include N. Savage and C. Edwards, A Guide to The Data Protection Act 1984 (Financial Training Ltd), D. Pannick, Sex Discrimination Law (Clarendon Press) and F.P. Davidson, A Guide to The Wages Act 1986 (Financial Training Ltd) and B. Perrins, Trade Union Law (Butterworths). A good revision book for this chapter is Holmes and Painter, Employment Law (Blackstone Press Ltd) which is one of the SWOT series of law books. R. Kidner, Statutes on Employment Law (Blackstone Press Ltd) and Bowers and Auerbach, The Employment Act 1988 (Blackstone Press Ltd) are up-to-date books regarding the new employment and trade union legislation.Google Scholar
