Abstract
We have seen how unification was used in an attempt to get around some of the difficulties of the standard model. Some of the problems were solved by these theories, but not all. In fact, the most promising of them, SU(5), now seems to be in serious trouble; it predicts a lifetime for the proton that appears to be too short.
