Abstract
The terminology used to describe peple with primary mental handicaps has been subject to controversy and change since the nineteenth century. Although the current terminology in the UK is ‘people with learning disabilities’, the older term is used here. ‘Mental handicap’ remains the term favoured by the majority of parents of children with mental handicaps, and by the majority of the doctors directly involved in their care (Nursey et al., 1990).
