Zusammenfassung

The management of chronic obstructive airways disease, either as an elective post-operative procedure or as an emergency can pose many problems, not least of which is its recognition. Physicians, surgeons and anaesthetists should be on the alert for the apparently well compensated case where conditions can dramatically deteriorate in a dark corner of a medical ward or in the postoperative recovery room.
