Abstract

The fossil record of the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition appears to reflect the relatively sudden, global appearance and diversification of complex metazoan life. Despite assumptions and inferences of a long period of metazoan evolution prior to their preservation in the rock record, virtually all new fossil discoveries and stratigraphic sections only appear to reinforce the relative abruptness of this radiation event (Cloud, 1949; Valentine, 1973; Stanley, 1976; but see Durham, 1978; Runnegar, 1982a, b).
