Wettability of Reinforcing Fibers
Chapter
Abstract
In the production of fiber reinforced composite materials a solid-liquid interface is generated between the fiber and the matrix which is in a liquid or molten state. The strength of the final composite material will, in part, depend on how well the matrix material wets the fibers in this production phase. Poor wetting of the fibers may result in gaps between the fiber and the final solidified matrix. These gaps will be flaws in the final composite which will reduce its ultimate strength.
