Measurement of Exchange and Spin-Orbit Interaction Effects in Elastic Electron-Cesium Scattering
Abstract
Exchange of identical particles — here the exchange of the free electron with an atomic electron — is a quantum phenomenon. The spins play the role of markers: Elastic scattering “with exchange” can be distinguished from scattering “without exchange” if the two electrons have antiparallel spins. The spin dependence of exchange results from the different treatment of indistiguishable and distinguishable processes in quantum mechanics. In the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from polarized one-electron atoms, the differential cross section depends on the relative orientation of the polarization vectors for the electrons and the atoms P e and P a, respectively; the polarization P a refers to the valence-electron polarization, the nuclear polarization is irrelevant.
